1st Annual Katherine Norton Toys For Children Campaign
(A letter from the Norton Family)

We would like to start an annual toy drive for sick children hospitalized and undergoing treatment in memory of our beloved daughter Katherine. As most of you know, Katherine developed a love for young children starting from a very early age through baby sitting and teaching swim lessons. Those experiences would ultimately lead her on a life mission of becoming a kindergarten teacher. While still in High School, Katherine organized a Toy's for Tot's event in our Wellesley neighborhood. We'll always remember the joy she felt when delivering the carload of gifts generously donated by our community knowing the wonderful Christmas morning that so many children would now experience.

Her giving spirit continued even throughout the months that she was being treated in both Richmond at MCV and Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. Knowing the difficulties experienced during many long weeks in the hospital, Katherine organized a DVD collection drive to benefit the other children in her Oncology units. Once again, she was proud that so many friends donated 100's of movies to this great cause.

We would like to carry on our sweet Angels dream of providing these beautiful young children in treatment with gifts of love. The pediatric oncology unit at VCU allowed each child the opportunity to select a gift after their chemotherapy treatments. It was always so heartwarming to see what this simple gesture meant to the children and their families.

At Johns Hopkins, the children's unit, all 11 floors, scheduled a weekly Bingo event that you could participate from your hospital bed if necessary. Katherine always looked forward to the Wednesday Bingo as it always provided a brief diversion from the enormity of what she was experiencing. Winners would be allowed to select a gift from the donated toys and each child was always given the opportunity to select something. We still feel such gratitude for those moments of peaceful joy when Katherine could enjoy the simplicity of a wonderful childhood game.

Our goal in this effort is to collect unwrapped gifts and supply them to both hospitals children's units. We will be collecting toys, children's pillows, blankets or $5 gift cards (no clothing) through New Year's Day. These donations can be suitable for children of all ages up to 21 years.

If you would like to participate, items can be dropped off here at the Cathedral. Please share with your friends and family.

On behalf of the memory of our beautiful Daughter, Katherine.
Thank you and much love, Stasia and family
